For a billion people the Bible is a luxury they can't afford

WHEN YOU LIVE ON 60P A DAY OWNING A BIBLE IS OUT OF REACH

It's hard to imagine longing for a Bible but having no hope of ever affording one. But that's how it is for millions.

In our world a billion people must live on just 60p a day. And there are millions more who live on the edge of poverty, using every last penny for life's essentials.

Meanwhile the Church is growing fast in some of the poorest communities. And that's creating an urgent need for Bibles at a price people can afford – for some this must be free of charge.

Only then will Christians be able to mature and grow. Only then will churches have the knowledge to hold fast to the truth – and put it into action to transform their communities and make known the truth that will set others free.

The demand for Bibles is phenomenal among poor communities. For example, Tassew Negash, from Bible Society of Ethiopia says, "We could distribute 40,000 Bibles every month in Addis Ababa alone. But we don't have the funds to meet demand."

BIBLE REACHES HOMELESS YOUNGSTERS IN ROMANIA

Homeless youngsters at the Sfanta Macrina Drop-in Centre

As well as receiving a hot meal and a bath, homeless youngsters at The Sfanta Macrina Drop-in Centre for Street Children in Bucharest get an added extra. What they get is the encouragement and opportunity to read Bibles provided by Bible Society. The staff there are seeing how God's Word comforts the young people in their impoverished daily lives and encourages them to get off the streets by providing the personal, moral and spiritual strength they need. When 12-year-old Alexandra, abandoned by her parents, closed the Bible she had been reading, she said simply, “I want to belong to God”.

“This is one of the most fundamental ministries. If you have to cut out every ministry and keep one, printing and distributing the Bible has to be number one. The Word of God is more important than any radio programme... any commentary... any preaching. The Word of God is the fundamental work.”
Dr Luis Palau, Evangelist, author and radio broadcaster
