A billion people can't read but only 3% of languages have the Bible in audioVAST SWATHES OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION CAN'T TO READ – INCLUDING HALF OF AFRICABeing able to read is something we take for granted. Worldwide it's not that way – with a quarter of the world's youth and adults illiterate. Most will live and die that way. If they are to be impacted by the Bible's life-changing message, it must come to them in audio format. Yet 6,700 languages still wait for the Bible in audio. And only 200 languages have the New Testament in audio. The Bible in audio is not second best. When people in an oral culture hear the Bible together it comes alive. They enter the story themselves and take it to their heart. Around two-thirds of the world's population still have an oral culture like that – with half of them living in India and China. They are trapped in Bible poverty, robbed of the truth that Jesus can set them free, until they have the Bible in a form they can hear. In over 60 countries, Bible Society is using audio recordings to create Faith Comes By Hearing listening groups. And as the Bible comes alive and the truth sets people free, amazing things are happening. HEARING LEADS TO ACTION FOR GUATEMALAN CAKCHIQUEL SPEAKERS
“When the tapes came it was like a miracle”, said one Cakchiquel-speaking woman. “The meaning was clear and we understood everything. It was also like a video, because we could see it in our minds.” At certain points, she said, they would stop the tape and eagerly discuss something the reading had raised. Like where Jesus talked about adultery. “Adultery was always happening in our village and was accepted as normal," the woman explained. "But when Jesus said it was wrong, it had to be discussed.”
A BIBLE CHIP TO REACH THE ENDS OF THE EARTH
How do you get the Bible in audio to people without electricity or even daylight? Bible Society's answer is MegaVoice. An amazing credit card sized device much like a primitive iPod with a built in speaker. The MegaVoice holds a searchable computer chip of the whole New Testament. Its integrated solar panel yields limitless power. And it's rugged enough to cope with even the harshest of climates. So from the Arctic Circle to the rain forests of South America and the deserts of Africa, the Bible's MegaVoice can be heard loud and clear. New technology taking this historic message to those who have waited so long.
